Early on in my career, a great boss and mentor gave me that advice. He said, “Coleen, you have to find your ‘win,’ in everyday, because life is hard and will chew you up and spit you out – if you let it. So, make sure you find your ‘win,’ in every day.” He also followed it up with the fact that your ‘win’ doesn’t have to be professionally. He said, “I don’t care if you found a cool new way to tie your shoes, and that made you happy, and that’s all you could find in your day – take it. Take that ‘win’ and move on.”
At the time, I was in my early twenties, and didn’t care much for pep talks – because I was young and knew everything, right? Weren’t we all.
However, as I’ve aged through my career, I find his words really sticking with me – especially on the tough days. I do find it important to find a ‘win,’ no matter how small – professionally or personally. A ‘win’ for me is usually finishing a huge project, maybe binging a new show on the weekend, getting a new contract, or any sort of teachable moment I have with someone, where I see the ‘lightbulb’ – those are a few of my ‘wins.’
I would ask you to start looking for your ‘wins’ in your everyday life. I’m not saying everyone should walk around with rose-colored glasses or be naïve to the world we live in. I do think that on a personal level, it is easy to reflect inward about how you measure your own successes and tuck those moments away to make your life a little easier; make the next day more enjoyable.
If you’re struggling to find your win, or feel stuck – give me a shout and I’ll help you get a leg up – or maybe teach you a cool new way to tie your shoes.
