We get asked this a lot and can’t explain any further than, what a HUGE value it is to receive professional training from people in your field and make you a better professional! We wanted to follow up, "Staying on Top of It," because some folks might not understand what their boss may be looking for when it comes to a budget request for media training. Think of all the knowledge you can bring back and share with others. Think of things you can learn to make your job and, also life, run easier!

That’s what your boss wants, right? – Return on investment. What are they getting out of spending money on you? Do your research on the training you want to receive or attend:

How long is it? What’s the cost? How long will you be out of the office? Can you work remotely while attending training? What are the work expectations of attending training, while also working remotely? Do you have an agenda or at least a partial agenda to show your boss exactly which sessions you’ll be attending? Why is this training so important?

Now that you’ve got a lot of the leg work out of the way, it is important to explain to your boss the benefits you’ll receive from the training and how it will best impact you, your job, and others you work with. Be able to answer your boss’ questions! Know what you’re talking about! Reach out to people who have received the same training in the past and ask how it benefitted them at work.

Have you ever been to a conference or media training, and wish you could talk to that presenter afterward, or ask questions even a few months later after reviewing some pieces of that training? Well, you’re in luck, because Your Town Media Training can stay on with you or your team for a full year and beyond after any training is complete. We are big believers in following up and making sure you are successful and adding training throughout the year. We do monthly check-ins and ensure you’re implementing the media training you received.

Another great resource for online training and basics is the FEMA website. “Public information entails the processes and systems that enable effective communications with various target audiences.” Your Town Media Training can go a step beyond this training with real-life incidents and hands-on media training, often not offered in certain areas.

Because technology always changing and social media being a huge part of a Public Information Officer’s job, finding training to keep up with best practices isn’t hard to find, and that should be a sticking point with any manager of why you need continuing education in the field. With trends and best practices shifting together it’s crucial that communicators stay current on knowledge! Your Town Media Training can build custom-tailored training to fit your needs, and custom structure your continued education.
