Scrolly…. WHHHAAAA?! Scrollytelling.

Last time I threw a fun, new word at you – so thought I better do a little explaining this time.

Scrollytelling, yes, it’s a word; seems pretty straight forward for those of you who are active in your online presence. Yet, this new term isn’t all that new. Being thrown around as early as 2015, the term Scrollytelling can be, “a form of interactive storytelling that unfolds as you scroll and includes elements that are activated or triggered by the scrolling,” or, “also called Narrative Visualization (discussed as early as 2010), it consists of creating a logical sequence of related (data-driven) visualizations, or visual elements, needed to convey a message to an audience in an engaging and effective way.” (This article has some great examples.)

Are you directing your audience away from your social media pages to more information on an outside website or webpage? Maybe you’re trying to grab their attention on your social media platform, and lead them to something more than you can include in a simple social media post.

We are learning how to best grab our audience’s attention in the little time they’re scrolling on their screens – it’s three seconds. Crazy, right?!

Yeah, you have three seconds to grab the attention of whoever is scrolling through all the content on their screens (news, ads, pop-ups, etc.). And if you’re not using visuals, chances are your content isn’t seen at all.

Scrollytelling, albeit might be a new term for some, the education field, journalism, science, sports, and more are using the technique to keep and expand their audiences. Are you keeping your audience engaged by using visuals? Are you also giving them the information you want them to have in a short-enough period?

Believe me your content is going to get more views and interactions if it has some sort of visuals, like this post that reached 320 people:

Rather than if a post looked like this:

Your Town Media Training has a little over 80 followers, where that municipal page has over 13,000 followers; visuals matter.

Are you placing an advertisement, hoping it gets noticed? Are you posting in a newsfeed? Are you placing a link on your social media post to direct your audience to more information?
